I’ve recently embarked on a new journey in my young adult life – working a full time job. It’s not a terrible thing, but it’s just totally new for me to just sit at a desk and look at a computer screen for 8 hours. I do have other job requirements that have me walking around every so often, but for the most part I’m just sitting at my desk. And no matter what kind of job you work, it’s always going to feel like it’s been a long day by the time you get home
You would think the last thing I wanna do when I get home is sit and use my laptop, but that’s exactly what I do. I log into WordPress and start brainstorming ideas of things to post or what to film for my YouTube channel. For some reason, being on the computer at home isn’t tiring it’s very relaxing. It could be because it’s a creative outlet for me to make content for my social platforms and also, I’m in bed watching Netflix at the same time.
If you’re like me working your first full time job and all you want to do is relax when you’re off you should definitely try out some of these great ways to unwind after an 8 hour shift!
1. Take a Bubble Bath
Showers are an obligation after work, especially if you’re working in a healthcare field. When I get home, there are moments where a quick rinse and a nice bubble bath are necessary. Since I’m more in the front of the office I don’t get much exposure to bodily fluids but I’m always talking to people and the amount of paperwork I touch can get really gross. If this is the only ‘you’ time you get and you want to catch up on some reading or the newest season of Grey’s on Netflix but have no where to put your things on, try this bathtub caddy tray from Amazon. What’s great about it is the wine glass holder! Just slide in your glass of wine, enjoy your Netflix, and allow your skin to relax and hydrate.
2. Make Your Favorite Beverage
During the summer, a nice cup of iced tea will totally hit the spot. My favorite summer drink is a Passion Tea from Starbucks. This drink just screams vacation mode to me. Now, if you like a little kick in your drink a margarita or even a glass of rosé will do the trick to help you unwind. For colder weather, my go to is a hot chocolate with cinnamon is a perfect drink to make you feel relaxed. The cinnamon adds a little twist to the drink and makes it feel like the holiday season really is near. As for tea, my recommendation would be something without caffeine! Yogi teas are currently some of my favorites, especially their Bedtime tea. If you’ve never tried them, you can order them on Amazon here and they’re only $6.00 for a pack of 16!
3. Order Your Favorite Cheat Meal
Sometimes a day at work can been extremely long and super stressful that it calls for your ultimate favorite cheat meal. For me that’s a number #1 from In-N-Out: a double-double combo with french fries and a coke. There’s something about indulging a nice juicy burger that puts me at ease. I definitely don’t resort to food when I’m feeling stressed, I quickly want to put that out there. But there are moments where a meal is well deserved. If your cheat meal is on the healthier side, you should still go for it!
4. Do a Spa Night
We get so preoccupied with the things we have waiting for us after work that we easily forget to take care of ourselves. Something I’ve learned to do is give myself at least one day out of the week where I go in “spa” mode. Try doing some exfoliation and facial masks to relieve your skin of any dirt. Maybe even light your favorite candle to add on to your spa night. If you’re anything like me, White Barn fall scented candles will for sure do the trick.
5. Go to a Yoga Class
Bikram Yoga is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. It may not make sense to want to do exercise after working 8 hours, but the heat of the room will feel so good you’ll be really glad you did it. This will also help relax your muscles after standing or sitting for so long. If you live in the Bay Area, I recommend going to Being Yoga in Burlingame.
6. Go to Bed Early
If your day has just been completely unbearable try calling it a night early. You’ll probably feel better after having a good nights rest. But remember that tomorrow is always a brand new day!
It’s extremely to take care of your physical and mental health. Try taking a couple hours at the end of your day to try some of these ideas and be ready to conquer the next day!
